A Book To Cozy Up To-THE MERYL STREEP MOVIE CLUB by Mia March
Meryl Streep has got it going on. She is an ageless beauty with a pile of movies to her credit. Now she can add inspiration for a book to her repertoire.
Mia March’s novel, The Meryl Streep Movie Club, is the latest SheReads blog book selection and I was lucky to receive a copy for review.
The book leads readers through the lives of three cousins, two of them sisters, and Lolly Weller, the woman who raised them. Brought back together after unfortunate circumstances for all of them, they rediscover themselves as well as their relationships with each other as they meet for their weekly for movie nights with Meryl at the inn Lolly runs with her daughter, Kat. They find their way back as a family after long nights sharing popcorn and their secrets long after the credits roll.
This was a delightful book that made me want to fire up my Netflix queue and book a bed and breakfast immediately. The setting is in a town of Boothbay Harbor, Maine (a real place-I looked it up!) and the more I read books set in this region, the more I want to take a pick up the stakes and relocate. At least for the summer.
Okay, maybe autumn, too.
It was hard to keep from shouting words of wisdom to the characters in the book as they wavered and plunged along their paths. In the end, I held the book and the characters close to my heart. I found myself holding back a few tears in one particular spot which took me by surprise. But I love being an emotional roller coaster as I read.
This is a fun read yet with serious themes that run throughout. The Weller family dynamics and all of its humanness make the characters relatable and easy to cheer for. If you like stories about families and all of its complexities, this book is worth picking up. Think Maine’s version of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells or perhaps The Island by Elin Hilderbrand.

I'm a midwest gal living vicariously through books, writing, her crazy family, and a few great friends. My blog covers all of the above as I attempt to figure out what the hell I'm doing at any given moment.

I’m glad you enjoyed it a little more than me. Nice review
It did make me feel like I should probably watch more of her movies, I haven’t seen too many and she IS amazing.
I read your review and I totally get what you are saying about the character confusion. It made me pay attention a little more in the beginnning but as their individual story lines developed it was a lot easier to tell who was who. I don’t think I would have picked up this book on my own as well but glad I did. It was a nice casual read which was a nice break from THOSE WHO SAVE US which I recently finished and UNBROKEN which is my local book club’s read. A bit heavy as of late so it was a nice change.
Thanks for stopping by!
I’m one hundred percent sure that you would love Boothbay Harbor — I’ve been there, and except for too many tourists in the summer, what an amazing place!! And best part of all, you need to pass right through my neck of the woods to get there, so we can have a nice visit!! I enjoyed this book too, and I agree, it was a nice summer read! (And I love Meryl’s movies, have you seen the latest one?)
