Muse 2013: Day One with Madeline Miller, Lynne Barrett, Jael McHenry and the Presenter’s Party
The Muse and The Marketplace was a three-day event starting on Friday afternoon. I had breakfast with Sharon Bially prior to our meeting with one of our clients (Douglas Trevor) and it was so great to finally meet in her person. We talked shop, met with Doug, then was off to my 1st session! I chose Madeline Miller’s Getting Unstuck because that is exactly where I’ve been on my novel-in-progress. I was one of the first ones in the room and was able to get a seat up front (nerd alert!). She introduced herself and then WHAM! It hit me. She was the author of the debut novel Song of Achilles which has been sitting on my shelf since last fall. She was sweet, almost timid, but oh, so welcoming. Here are the highlights from her workshop: Remember, writing is...

I guess the only place to start is the beginning and the beginning starts with Sharon Bially. As some of you know, I have been working with Sharon since September of last year at BookSavvy PR when she contacted me via Twitter about helping her with her new business venture. She had announced her new business months before and I had jokingly tweeted her about how fun it sounded and if she ever needed help to let me know. If you’ve been following this blog very long, you may have noticed I’m a huge advocate of authors. When I find a debut author or any author who’s work I enjoy and they’ve engaged in meaningful conversation with me, I usually do what I can to help market them. I enjoy doing author interviews and giveaways because I enjoy...

Today I’m over at Great New Books giving my latest book recommendation, Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian. Hop over there to find out why I loved it. Also, I’m currently reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood for my local book club and Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline for SheReads.org. I’m also listening to the audio version of Lord John and the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon. This is part of a three-book series and weaves in a character or two from her Outlander novels. It seemed sacrilegious for me not to have read all of her novels and decided to correct that. I don’t consider listening and reading experiences to be entirely the same thing but it helps me get through my to-read list. I listen while I...

Ahh, the Muse. It’s a fickle thing and many times it shows up when we least expect it. At least there is one that shows up consistently even if it is only once a year… Muse and The Marketplace national literary conference! I was lucky to be able to attend this year’s Muse and The Marketplace conference put on by Grub Street in Boston. Sharon Bially invited me to join her as part of our BookSavvy PR team and I was more than thrilled to come. We had many of our author clients in attendance and it was wonderful to meet them all, Douglas Trevor, Kim Triedman, Stuart Horwitz, Andrew Goldstein, as well as our newest, Tony Vanderwarker. I will admit, what really had me excited was meeting some people I’ve known for a while from online writing...
Read MoreThe Boston Marathon’s Ties to a Patriotic History
As tragic events unfolded last week surrounding the Boston Marathon, I realized I was quite ignorant of what the Boston Marathon means to the people of Boston and the running community. I mean I know that it is a world renowned race and all but as the news covered every possible angle of what happened on Monday, I began to understand that there was much more to it. So, as I love a good research project, I began to dig a little and thought I’d share what I learned. The Boston Marathon is held every year on Patriot’s Day, which is now held on the third Monday in April. The first Boston Marathon was held back in 1897 after being inspired by the marathon held at the 1896 Summer Olympics. It is the world’s oldest annual marathon, which started off...
