WAHMing and the Down Side of Snow Days

Branches of tree full of snowAnother snow day! I’m great with it except for the fact that I have an article due tomorrow and one on Friday. And one next week. And four, including a cover story that requires me to conference call with six interviewees. At one time. However, there isn’t much I can do with them since I’m waiting for return calls and emails from all of these folks. Throw in a barking dog and some snow-frolicking kids and you will find yourself a panicky WAHM (Work at Home Mom). So now I’m praying they don’t call back until Wednesday because schools have been cancelled again yet that puts me one day closer to looming deadlines and no articles done! GAH!!

When I started freelancing, I wrote a couple of articles then shopped them around in my local market. I found an interested magazine and that’s where things took off. I started out with assignments with plenty of lead time and far off deadlines. Ah, the good old days. Now it seems as my list of assignments is grows, the more my writing lead time shrinks. I’m thrilled at the opportunities but at the same time, it is hard to be enthusiastic when I have a two week window to write and edit while the subject(s) of my articles won’t return my calls. It’s enough to make me batty.

Oh, wait. That’s already happened.

The positive side is that my editors have been great and have been helping try to reach the what I now call “Objects of My Obsession” so the pressure is off…a little. So what can you do?

Oh YEAH–it’s a snow day!

HUGE smile on my face right now. The video is enough to make me wish for colder temps and snow.

As for the articles, I feel your pain! As much as I love writing for magazines, the hardest part is having to wait on others to get back to you to schedule interviews before you can do your work. I don’t know how I’d deal with it if it weren’t for awesome editors who understand. One thing I have learned is that whether or not I freak out over it, it always works out in the end. So might as well have some fun with it and have a snow day (you’ve clearly mastered this already)!

So the busy week ahead you warned of has gotten ever crazier! And I just sent you some BookSavvy stuff! Eek. It can wait till next week. And from one WAHM to another: the benefits are more than worth it! :-)

I love this post–the balance, the loving it all and doing it all. I know you’ll get your pieces in, and in the meantime, enjoy the snow!

    • Thanks Kate! Such a nice surprise to see your name pop up in my comments! As Sharon said, the benefits of being a WAHM are definitely worth it. As always, I appreciate you stopping by.

I was going to say “MOVE TO CALIFORNIA – WE DON’T HAVE SNOW DAYS!”

Then I saw the video. So adorable. We don’t have that in LA either.

(And the warm weather can be just as distracting. So I’ve heard.)

    • LOL, I think I could find a distraction in pretty much anything. Hope all is good on the home front and you are feeling settled again. Talk about a distraction. :(

Hi again, Hallie. I’m glad I stopped in for this post — it made me smile. That video is adorable. (We don’t get many snow days in Texas.) And I love the acronym WAHM. I hope you’re able to get caught up with your to-do list soon! In the meantime, maybe you can enjoy the snow. :)

    • Funny you should say that…I am almost done! Two more articles to turn in today and I am off to the slopes of Steamboat, Colorado for a little “rest”. The only deadline I will have to worry about will be Happy Hour at the bottom! We had a blast in the snow as you can tell from the video. :) I was raised in Nebraska and we got a lot more than we do here. To get that big storm was great for the kids since we only get a dusting here and there most of the time. Hope things are well on your end!
